Personalizing Treatment for SSc through Multidisciplinary Collaboration, Consideration of Patient-Reported Outcomes

Early treatment in systemic sclero (SSc) is critical to minimizing organ damage and improving patient outcomes. Therapies with FDA approval in SSc, namely nintedanib and tocilizumab, represent substantial advances over the historic standard of care but possess notable limitations. Long-term management is needed to optimize treatment as the disease progresses. In this activity, leading experts will examine patient vignettes that reflect real-world clinical challenges in SSc management, focusing on interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). The expert panel will also discuss the complex nature of the disease, and the multidisciplinary care that is required. Topics include the role of specialists and primary care providers in SSc diagnosis and management and how both types of clinicians can work together in patient management, tailoring treatment options for personalized care, and the valuable role of patient-reported outcomes to identify thresholds for symptom onset, evaluate response to treatment, and improve physician-patient communication and decision-making approaches.
