Demodex Blepharitis and the Ocular Surface: Setting the Stage for Surgical Success

Eyelid inflammation and ocular surface disease are often underdiagnosed and undertreated in patients preparing for refractive or cataract surgery. Blepharitis, frequently associated with Demodex mites, can compromise tear film stability, affect preoperative measurements, and lead to suboptimal surgical outcomes or dissatisfied patients. Despite its prevalence, many patients are asymptomatic, and surgeons may overlook early signs of disease. Education is needed to highlight the importance of identifying, diagnosing, and treating eyelid margin disease to optimize both patient comfort and visual outcomes before and after ocular surgery.
