Developmental Disturbances of the Teeth, Anomalies of Number

Developmental dental anomalies related to tooth number, focusing on conditions, eg, anodontia, hypodontia, oligodontia, and hyperdontia. These anomalies can significantly impact oral health and function, ranging from the complete absence of teeth to the presence of supernumerary teeth. This course reviews the classification, etiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic strategies associated with these conditions. Emphasis is placed on early detection and intervention, particularly in pediatric populations, to reduce long-term complications and enhance treatment outcomes. Participants will explore both syndromic and nonsyndromic forms of dental agenesis, associated genetic and developmental syndromes, including ectodermal dysplasia and cleidocranial dysplasia, as well as appropriate diagnostic tools and management strategies. Special attention is given to clinical decision-making in cases of hyperdontia, including monitoring or extraction when indicated. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying conditions associated with dental anomalies related to tooth number, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing these conditions.
