Dietary Approaches to Obesity Treatment

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease characterized by excessive adiposity that adversely affects physical and mental health and contributes substantially to global morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs, and loss of productivity. Contemporary understanding of obesity has evolved beyond simple energy imbalance to recognize the complex interplay of hormonal, neuronal, genetic, metabolic, behavioral, and environmental factors that regulate appetite, body weight, and energy homeostasis. This course reviews recent advances in dietary approaches to obesity treatment that address dietary quality, food processing, physical activity, sleep, stress, and chronic inflammation, which play critical roles in disease development and progression. Participants will gain an understanding of the distinction between clinical obesity and preclinical obesity, approaches to diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment selection, and outcome assessment, as well as the impact of obesity on cardiometabolic health. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in understanding the pathophysiology of obesity, applying evidence-based lifestyle interventions and dietary strategies, setting realistic weight-loss goals, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach to develop individualized management plans that support sustainable weight reduction and long-term health improvement.
