Diphyllobothriasis (Fish Tapeworm Infection)

Diphyllobothriasis is an intestinal helminthic infection caused by broad or fish tapeworms that has gained increasing clinical relevance due to rising case reports outside traditional endemic regions, expanding global consumption of raw or undercooked fish, and advances in molecular diagnostics that have refined species classification and epidemiologic understanding. This course reviews the clinical presentation of this infection, which is frequently asymptomatic or associated with mild gastrointestinal symptoms, and its potential to cause vitamin B12 deficiency, rare obstructive complications, as well as diagnostic uncertainty, as morphological identification alone lacks species specificity. Participants will also gain an understanding of diagnosis through exposure history and stool examination, with molecular methods supporting epidemiologic investigations when indicated. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying risk factors, evaluating suspected infection, interpreting appropriate diagnostic studies, implementing evidence-based treatment, monitoring therapeutic response, identifying complications requiring additional medical or surgical management, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition, thereby improving patient outcomes across diverse clinical settings.
