Duloxetine

Depression, anxiety, and chronic pain disorders are common conditions that often require long-term pharmacologic management. Duloxetine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain, with additional off-label use reported in selected clinical settings. Safe and effective use of duloxetine requires an understanding of its pharmacology, appropriate patient selection, dosing strategies, adverse effects, contraindications, clinically significant drug interactions, and monitoring requirements. This educational activity provides an evidence-based review of duloxetine, including its FDA-approved indications, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, administration, safety profile, overdose management, and key considerations for special populations. Learners will also review strategies for recognizing and managing adverse effects, preventing clinically important drug interactions, and optimizing therapeutic outcomes through appropriate patient counseling and monitoring. Finally, this activity highlights the importance of interprofessional collaboration among clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support safe prescribing, improve medication adherence, facilitate early recognition of treatment-related complications, and enhance patient-centered care and clinical outcomes.
