Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) comprise a diverse group of heritable connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility with multisystem involvement that often leads to delayed recognition and diagnosis. This course discusses advances in classification and molecular genetics that have expanded understanding of the 14 recognized EDS subtypes, including the severe vascular form associated with arterial and organ rupture. This activity reviews the clinical manifestations of EDS that range from chronic pain, recurrent dislocations, autonomic dysfunction, and poor wound healing to life-threatening vascular and obstetric complications, as well as its diagnostic evaluation, including recognition of characteristic clinical findings, targeted genetic testing for most subtypes, and careful differentiation from other connective tissue disorders. Participants will gain an understanding of EDS pathophysiology, subtype classification, genetic evaluation, surveillance strategies, and evidence-based management approaches. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying EDS, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to improve long-term patient outcomes.
