EMS Pneumothorax

Pneumothorax involves air accumulation in the pleural space, causing lung collapse due to visceral or parietal pleural disruption. The condition often arises from traumatic chest injury, spontaneous rupture of subpleural blebs, or, less commonly, iatrogenic injury. Untreated cases may produce tension pneumothorax, leading to hemodynamic compromise and death. Most emergency medical service providers in the US maintain protocols for the rapid assessment and management of pneumothorax. Multiple treatment modalities are available for use by prehospital providers, with utilization varying according to level of training and geographic location. No single standardized method is implemented at the national level. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to sharpen learners’ skills in evaluating and managing pneumothorax in the prehospital setting. Participants will deepen their understanding of the relevant anatomy and physiology, therapeutic recommendations in the field, indications, contraindications, technique, benefits, and risks. Enhanced competence will foster interprofessional collaboration when caring for affected individuals.
