Epidural Abscess

Epidural abscess is a rare but potentially devastating infection of the cranial or spinal epidural space that can rapidly progress to irreversible neurologic injury or death if not promptly recognized and treated. This course differentiates between the presentation of spinal epidural abscess, characterized by back pain, fever, and radicular symptoms, which progresses through stages to weakness and paralysis, and intracranial epidural abscess, which may present with headache, fever, and signs of increased intracranial pressure. Participants will also gain an understanding of early and atypical presentations, the interpretation of diagnostic imaging, and the implementation of timely, evidence-based management strategies, including urgent surgical decompression or drainage and prolonged intravenous antibiotic therapy targeting likely pathogens. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying epidural abscesses, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
