Erb Palsy

Erb palsy, the most common form of neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP), results primarily from traction injury to the upper brachial plexus involving the C5 to C6 nerve roots, with occasional extension to C7, producing characteristic upper-extremity weakness and functional impairment. Most cases occur during childbirth, often in association with shoulder dystocia and fetal macrosomia, although injury may also develop without recognized obstetric trauma and can occur later in life after traction-related injury. This course reviews the clinical evaluation of Erb palsy, which relies on a detailed birth history, serial neuromuscular examinations, and recognition of associated findings indicating more severe involvement or a poorer prognosis, as well as its management involving longitudinal assessment, physical and occupational therapy, timely referral for surgical evaluation when recovery is limited, and prevention of long-term musculoskeletal and developmental complications. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in the early identification of Erb palsy, performing the recommended evaluation, stratifying risk factors, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
