Esophageal Foreign Body

Esophageal foreign body impaction commonly results from accidental ingestion in children and food bolus impaction in adults with preexisting esophageal pathology, including strictures, eosinophilic esophagitis, or motility disorders. Impaction causes luminal obstruction and may lead to pressure necrosis, perforation, or airway compromise if not promptly treated. Patients typically present with dysphagia, odynophagia, chest pain, drooling, or inability to tolerate oral secretions. Evaluation relies on clinical assessment, imaging when indicated, and endoscopy. Management depends on the object type, location, symptoms, and complication risk, with urgent endoscopic removal indicated for high-risk presentations. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing esophageal foreign body impaction. Participants will strengthen their mastery of the condition’s etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations. Advanced skills will equip clinicians to collaborate with interprofessional teams caring for affected individuals.
