Femoral Hernia

Femoral hernias, though less common than inguinal hernias, pose a significant risk for complications such as incarceration and strangulation. This continuing education activity equips clinicians to recognize the clinical presentation of femoral hernias, accurately identify their anatomical boundaries, and apply appropriate diagnostic tools to distinguish them from other groin pathologies. Participants will examine surgical management options ranging from open to minimally invasive approaches and understand the considerations necessary when complications are present, such as bowel strangulation or contamination. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the interprofessional team in optimizing patient outcomes through timely surgical referral, coordinated perioperative care, and comprehensive postoperative support. By participating in this activity, clinicians can expect to enhance their ability to assess groin masses, implement evidence-based surgical strategies, and collaborate effectively with surgeons, radiologists, nurses, and pharmacists. Ultimately, this activity supports improved clinical decision-making, earlier intervention, and safer recovery for patients diagnosed with femoral hernias.
