Folic Acid

Folic acid supplementation plays an important role in preventing neural tube defects, treating folate deficiency anemia, and supporting care for patients with increased folate requirements or medication-related depletion. Despite its relative safety and broad clinical use, clinicians may inconsistently assess vitamin B12 status before treatment, counsel women of childbearing age on supplementation timing, adjust therapy for high-risk populations, or coordinate care among interprofessional team members. This continuing medical education activity addresses this practice gap by reviewing folate physiology, evidence-based dosing, clinical manifestations of deficiency, safety considerations, and strategies for distinguishing folate deficiency from vitamin B12 deficiency. Participants will gain practical skills for risk assessment, supplementation planning, complication prevention, patient counseling, and interprofessional coordination. The activity emphasizes timely supplementation before conception, recognition of medication-related folate depletion, and patient-centered approaches to improving outcomes in adult, pediatric, pregnant, and high-risk populations.
