GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are powerful tools for managing type 2 diabetes (T2D), but concerns about adverse events (AEs) frequently stop patients before they start, and patients who are not prepared to manage common side effects may discontinue GLP-1RA prematurely. Without clear, proactive communication from clinicians, intended effects can be mistaken for alarming symptoms, and serious AEs may go unnoticed. Furthermore, social drivers of health (SDoH) create real and often overlooked barriers to GLP-1 RA therapy access, initiation, and persistence. Clinicians and other members of the multidisciplinary teams must be equipped to provide clear, compassionate counseling that clarifies the treatment journey and addresses social and systemic challenges for patients with T2D. In the sixth activity of this CME Outfitters Snack series, expert faculty will demonstrate integration of specific resources on AE mitigation and expectations as part of regular counseling for patients treated with GLP-1 RAs to improve adherence. Learners will be shown how to integrate GLP-1 RAs into a broader T2D management plan by detecting and addressing barriers to access and optimal utilization.
