Global Guidelines and Strategies for HIV Screening and Diagnosis

Despite major advances in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) management, including effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) and long-acting injectables, gaps in screening, testing, and diagnosis continue to limit patient outcomes and prevention efforts. Many clinicians particularly in primary care and community settings face challenges integrating evolving global testing guidelines into practice, leading to inconsistent screening, delayed diagnosis, and missed opportunities for rapid linkage to care. These issues are further compounded by stigma, bias, resource limitations, and regional disparities in access to care. To address these barriers, clinicians need practical, regionally relevant education that strengthens their ability to implement evidence-based HIV testing strategies, adopt routine screening, and integrate rapid-start/same-day ART workflows. Equipping clinicians with effective communication techniques and culturally responsive approaches is essential to improving patient engagement, increasing HIV testing uptake, and ultimately reducing HIV transmission and disease burden. In this CMEO Snack, expert faculty will discuss the role of HIV testing in connecting individuals to the care continuum, with a focus on global testing guidelines. Faculty will also explore strategies for increasing HIV testing uptake across the socioeconomic spectrum by reviewing effective communication approaches to address stigma, bias, and access/resource barriers; comparing testing practices and guideline recommendations by region; and outlining rapid-start and same-day ART initiation workflows following diagnosis.
