Chest pain is the second most common complaint seen in the emergency department, making up 7.6 million annual visits. Finding those few patients with life-threatening causes of chest pain is perhaps the emergency provider’s most important task. High-risk conditions such as acute aortic dissection, acute myocardial infarction, and pulmonary embolism are often misdiagnosed.
This online activity aims to facilitate discussion, refresh knowledge, and hone providers’ practice patterns to more accurately diagnose high-risk conditions commonly missed in the chest pain patient. You will be presented with a series of questions. Each question is followed by discussion points and an action item that can be easily applied to your next shift. After completing this activity, ED providers/team members should be able to: identify high-risk conditions commonly missed in the chest pain patient and utilize key clinical findings to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis for chest pain patients.
