Hookworm

Hookworm infection represents a significant neglected tropical disease affecting impoverished populations in tropical and subtropical regions. This course details the primary human hookworm pathogens, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, which infect individuals through skin contact with contaminated soil and their transmission, in which larvae migrate through the bloodstream to the lungs and subsequently to the small intestine, where they mature and feed on host blood. This activity reviews the life cycle, clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based pharmacologic therapy with anthelmintic agents. Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of pathophysiology and complications, such as anemia, eosinophilic pneumonia, and cutaneous larva migrans, as well as emerging concerns, including zoonotic transmission involving Ancylostoma ceylanicum and growing reports of reduced treatment efficacy following mass drug administration. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying hookworm infection, prevention strategies, performing the recommended evaluation, interpreting laboratory findings, selecting appropriate treatment, and implementing an interprofessional approach to manage this condition to improve patient outcomes and public health control.
