Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus represent common and increasingly prevalent metabolic disorders characterized by elevated blood glucose and progressive multisystem complications affecting cardiovascular, renal, neurologic, and ocular health. This course reviews diabetes mellitus, which is diagnosed using a fasting plasma glucose of 126 mg/dL or greater, a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test of 200 mg/dL or higher, an HbA1c of 6.5% or more, or a random plasma glucose of 200 mg/dL or greater in symptomatic patients, as well as prediabetes, which reflects intermediate glycemic abnormalities. Participants will gain an understanding of type 2 diabetes pathophysiology involving insulin resistance and -cell dysfunction, and type 1 diabetes resulting from autoimmune -cell destruction, secondary and medication-related hyperglycemia, and acute crises such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in diagnostic classification, evidence-based screening, individualized glycemic targets, and contemporary pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies, as well as in implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to optimize outcomes and reduce complications.
