Hypomelanosis of Ito

Hypomelanosis of Ito (HOI) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by linear or whorled streaks of hypopigmentation following the lines of Blaschko. Presenting typically at birth or early infancy, these skin changes are asymmetric, stable over time, and spare the palms, soles, and mucous membranes. HOI arises from postzygotic somatic mutations causing chromosomal mosaicism, which impacts melanocyte development and function. The condition is associated with a range of multisystem abnormalities, most commonly involving the nervous system such as epilepsy, intellectual disability, and structural brain anomalies as well as musculoskeletal asymmetry, ocular malformations, and occasional cardiac or genitourinary defects. Diagnosis is clinical, often supported by cytogenetic analysis of affected tissue. Management focuses on the early identification of comorbidities and lifelong multidisciplinary support. This educational activity enables healthcare professionals to improve diagnostic accuracy and broaden clinical awareness of HOI as a multisystem condition rather than an isolated dermatologic finding. Participants learn to identify key clinical features, recognize associated neurologic and systemic abnormalities, and understand the underlying mosaic genetic mechanisms. Emphasis is placed on integrating care through collaboration with dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, genetics, orthopedics, and developmental specialists. This interprofessional approach ensures timely referrals, optimizes early intervention and enhances outcomes through coordinated patient-centered care and appropriate family counseling.
