Intussusception in Adults

Adult intussusception is a rare but clinically significant condition characterized by telescoping of a segment of bowel into an adjacent distal segment, often resulting in obstruction, ischemia, or perforation. Unlike pediatric cases, adult intussusception is usually associated with a definable pathological lead point, including malignant or benign neoplasms, postoperative adhesions, or inflammatory bowel disease. Clinical presentation is frequently nonspecific and intermittent, with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, or obstructive symptoms, contributing to delayed diagnosis. Computed tomography is the diagnostic modality of choice, and surgical intervention is typically required to relieve the obstruction and address the underlying etiology. By participating in this course, clinicians can expect to enhance their ability to recognize adult intussusception despite its atypical presentation, apply evidence-based diagnostic strategies, and determine whether operative or nonoperative management is appropriate. Learners strengthen their understanding of surgical decision-making, including indications for bowel resection, oncologic considerations, and postoperative surveillance. The course also reinforces interdisciplinary coordination and patient education strategies to reduce recurrence, improve outcomes, and minimize complications associated with delayed or inappropriate management.
