Joint Preservation: Why Cutting Isn t Always the Solution

Joint injuries and musculoskeletal conditions are common among athletes, particularly women, yet many clinicians are underinformed about emerging non-surgical approaches to prevention and recovery. Advances in orthobiologics, biomechanics, and individualized care strategies offer effective alternatives to surgery, especially for active populations. There is a need for updated education on innovative joint preservation techniques, sports-specific rehabilitation practices, and evidence-based strategies tailored to female athletes to improve outcomes and prolong athletic performance. Learning Objectives: Identify non-surgical joint preservation and recovery strategies, including the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and orthobiologic therapies. Describe sports-specific injury risks and cross-training considerations for athletes, with a focus on tailoring care to different disciplines. Discuss the unique injury patterns and prevention strategies for female athletes, including the role of biomechanics, neuromuscular control, and strength training.
