Laryngeal Mask Airway

This activity reviews the clinical role of laryngeal mask airways in airway management across operating room, emergency, intensive care, and prehospital settings. Laryngeal mask airways provide a supraglottic option for oxygenation and ventilation when mask ventilation is inadequate, endotracheal intubation is delayed or difficult, or a temporary conduit to intubation is needed. Despite their ease of placement and favorable complication profile compared with bag-valve-mask ventilation and endotracheal intubation in selected patients, inappropriate patient selection, poor sizing, incorrect positioning, and overreliance on these devices in patients at high risk for aspiration can lead to inadequate ventilation, leaks, malposition, gastric insufflation, or aspiration. This activity addresses this gap by reviewing indications, contraindications, placement technique, device selection, complication prevention, and interprofessional coordination. Participants will gain actionable skills for safer airway decision-making and rescue airway planning.
