Latissimus Dorsi Flap

The latissimus dorsi flap remains a versatile and dependable reconstructive technique for managing soft-tissue defects involving the breast, chest wall, head and neck, upper extremity, and trunk. Consistent vascular anatomy, reliable tissue perfusion, and the ability to harvest the flap as a muscle-only, myocutaneous, or free flap support its broad clinical application. This activity reviews relevant anatomy, indications, contraindications, surgical planning, operative technique, postoperative management, potential complications, and strategies to reduce donor-site morbidity while optimizing functional and aesthetic outcomes. Participants learn to evaluate appropriate reconstructive options, apply evidence-based surgical principles, recognize and manage complications, and individualize treatment based on patient characteristics and reconstructive goals. Collaboration with an interprofessional team strengthens perioperative coordination, supports timely recognition of complications, enhances rehabilitation and wound management, and improves overall patient outcomes and surgical success.
