Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome

Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) is a lifelong, developmental epileptic encephalopathy that typically begins before age 8, with peak onset between the ages of 3 and 5. LGS is characterized by frequent seizures, including atonic, tonic, and atypical absence seizures, which contribute to behavioral disorders and intellectual disabilities. Multiple seizures are often accompanied by distinctive electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, including interictal slow spike-wave discharges and generalized paroxysmal fast activity during sleep. Although many cases of LGS are linked to underlying genetic mutations or cortical malformations, up to 40% have no identifiable cause. Diagnosis relies on clinical presentation, EEG findings, brain magnetic resonance imaging, and genetic testing. Due to the complexity of the condition and its long-term care requirements, LGS significantly impacts patients’ quality of life, placing considerable strain on caregivers and healthcare systems. Seizures are often treatment-resistant, necessitating multimodal therapy and coordinated, multidisciplinary care. This activity reviews the clinical presentation, underlying causes, and complex management of LGS. This activity provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge to recognize hallmark seizure types and EEG patterns, differentiate LGS from other pediatric epilepsies, and apply diagnostic strategies, including neuroimaging and genetic testing. Additionally, this activity covers evidence-based approaches to both pharmacological and surgical seizure management, preparing healthcare providers to address the challenges of treatment resistance. This activity also emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration among the healthcare team in coordinating multidisciplinary care and delivering patient and caregiver education, ultimately supporting improved outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with LGS.
