Lipid-Lowering Drug Therapy

Lipid-lowering drug therapy is central to reducing major cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, and unstable angina. This activity reviews conventional therapies, including statins, bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibrates, and cholesterol absorption inhibitors, as well as advanced agents such as PCSK9 inhibitors, small-interfering RNA agents, microsomal triglyceride transfer protein inhibitors, and antisense oligonucleotides. These therapies provide additional options for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or those unable to achieve lipid targets with traditional treatment. Learners will develop an understanding of the mechanisms, indications, and clinical applications of lipid-lowering therapies and evidence-based approaches to selecting and combining agents to reduce residual cardiovascular risk. Interprofessional collaboration among clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians supports patient-centered care through lifestyle modification, adherence support, and ongoing monitoring of treatment safety and efficacy.
