Lumbar Plexus Block

Lumbar plexus block represents an advanced regional anesthesia technique developed to achieve comprehensive neural blockade of the lumbar plexus for perioperative analgesia and selected surgical anesthesia. This course reviews the anatomy of the lumbar plexus, formed by L1 to L4 nerve roots within the psoas muscle, which exhibits notable anatomical variability that influences block performance and safety and the benefits of lumbar plexus block, including reducing perioperative opioid consumption, increasing the satisfaction of the patients with their pain control after surgery, and in some cases reducing the length of stay. Participants will also gain an understanding of the technical approaches, indications, contraindications, and management of complications of lumbar plexus blocks. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in performing lumbar plexus blocks, employing correct procedural techniques, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when caring for patients undergoing this procedure to reduce opioid use and improve patient outcomes through safe and effective application of lumbar plexus block techniques.
