Lumbosacral Facet Syndrome

Low back pain remains a leading cause of disability and one of the most frequent reasons for musculoskeletal consultations. Among its diverse etiologies, lumbosacral facet syndrome plays a significant yet often underrecognized role. This course provides clinicians with an in-depth understanding of facet-mediated pain, including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic workup. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing facet joint pain from other causes of low back pain such as discogenic or radicular syndromes. This course explores the roles of physical examination, imaging modalities, and diagnostic medial branch blocks in establishing a definitive diagnosis as well as current nonoperative, minimally invasive, and surgical treatment strategies, including radiofrequency ablation, intraarticular steroid injections, and emerging biologic therapies. Special attention is given to procedural considerations, complication risks, and the evidence base behind various interventions. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying lumbosacral facet syndrome, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
