Lupus Nephritis

Lupus nephritis is a severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and damage to multiple organ systems, with the kidneys as a primary target. This condition often develops within 3 to 5 years of SLE onset and significantly increases the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Early detection of SLE through monitoring renal function, including serum creatinine levels, urine protein-to-creatinine ratios, and urinalysis, is essential for effectively managing the condition. The primary treatment goal is to preserve kidney function, slow disease progression, and improve outcomes, with therapies tailored to the specific pathological lesion. Treatment may include hydroxychloroquine for all patients and immunosuppressive or steroid therapy for more severe forms. Renal biopsy is used to determine the disease stage, but treatment may be initiated empirically if a biopsy is not feasible. This activity reviews a comprehensive understanding of lupus nephritis, including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options. This activity emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare providers in managing lupus nephritis and delivering integrated care. In addition, this activity enables healthcare professionals to learn strategies for optimizing patient outcomes, reducing morbidity, and preventing progression to ESRD, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients with lupus nephritis.
