Lymphocytic Hypophysitis

Lymphocytic hypophysitis is an uncommon autoimmune inflammatory disorder of the pituitary gland that presents clinically with hypopituitarism or local mass effect. The disease manifestations and imaging characteristics frequently resemble pituitary adenoma, resulting in diagnostic uncertainty and, in many cases, unnecessary surgical intervention. Reports suggest that up to 40% of patients are initially diagnosed with pituitary macroadenoma despite clinical or radiographic findings suggestive of hypophysitis. Accurate diagnosis relies on magnetic resonance imaging characteristics, endocrine testing, and, in selected cases, pituitary biopsy. Early recognition of associated hormone deficiencies, including adrenal insufficiency, is essential to prevent significant morbidity. Management strategies vary and include corticosteroid therapy, immunosuppressive regimens, or surgery in refractory cases. The absence of standardized guidelines contributes to variability in treatment decisions, delayed care, and inconsistent long-term follow-up, underscoring the need for enhanced clinician knowledge. This educational activity enables clinicians to strengthen competence in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing lymphocytic hypophysitis. Participants gain the ability to interpret imaging features, apply endocrine testing, and implement evidence-based therapeutic strategies tailored to disease severity. Emphasis is placed on recognizing complications, initiating timely hormone replacement, and integrating immunotherapy when appropriate. The activity highlights the importance of patient education and long-term follow-up to optimize safety and outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration among endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, and pharmacists enhances diagnostic accuracy, informs treatment planning, and ensures comprehensive care delivery. Through this team-based approach, clinicians advance their ability to apply consistent, evidence-based practices…
