Mitral Valve Prolapse

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common cause of nonischemic mitral regurgitation in the United States and a frequent valvular disorder with a generally favorable prognosis, although a subset of patients develops severe mitral regurgitation, infective endocarditis, ventricular arrhythmias, heart failure, or sudden cardiac death. This course reviews the growing recognition of arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse and mitral annular disjunction that has expanded understanding of disease mechanisms, risk stratification, and individualized management. This activity details the pathophysiology, genetic and structural variants, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation with echocardiography and advanced cardiac imaging, and evidence-based medical, surgical, and transcatheter treatment strategies. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying high-risk clinical and imaging features of MVP, accurately classifying disease severity, interpreting contemporary guideline recommendations, implementing appropriate surveillance and referral strategies, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to optimize patient outcomes through timely diagnosis, risk assessment, and individualized management.
