Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a highly specialized technique used in the treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers and select melanomas, particularly when located in cosmetically or functionally critical areas. The procedure allows for precise tumor removal with maximal conservation of surrounding healthy tissue by using staged excision and intraoperative histologic margin assessment. Following excision, reconstruction is often necessary to optimize aesthetic and functional outcomes. While surgical closure with flaps or grafts is common, secondary intention healing (SIH) in which the wound heals naturally through granulation and epithelialization can be a safe and effective alternative in select clinical scenarios. SIH is particularly useful in concave or vascularized regions, or in patients for whom complex reconstruction is contraindicated. This continuing education activity enhances healthcare professionals ability to assess, select, and manage appropriate candidates for SIH following MMS. Participants learn to evaluate anatomic, physiologic, and patient-specific factors, recognize potential complications, and implement evidence-based SIH techniques. The course emphasizes interprofessional collaboration among dermatologists, surgeons, nurses, and wound care specialists to support individualized treatment planning and optimize patient outcomes. Team-based decision-making and coordinated postoperative care improve functional and cosmetic results, reduce complications, and ensure comprehensive care for patients undergoing treatment for skin cancer.
