Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers play a central role in the management of bipolar disorder and related mood disorders, helping to control acute mood episodes and maintain long-term mood stability. Appropriate use of these agents requires an understanding of their distinct pharmacologic properties, therapeutic indications, adverse-effect profiles, monitoring requirements, and potential drug interactions. This activity reviews the clinical applications of commonly used mood stabilizers, including lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, and selected atypical antipsychotics with mood-stabilizing properties. Participants will explore mechanisms of action, FDA-approved and off-label uses, dosing and monitoring considerations, contraindications, toxicity management, and factors that influence treatment selection across diverse patient populations. The activity also examines the contributions of interprofessional healthcare teams to medication safety, patient education, and ongoing treatment monitoring. Upon completion, clinicians will be better equipped to individualize mood-stabilizing therapy and optimize outcomes for patients with bipolar disorder and related psychiatric conditions
