Myotonia

Myotonic disorders encompass a diverse group of inherited neuromuscular conditions characterized by delayed muscle relaxation after contraction or electrical stimulation, resulting from skeletal muscle hyperexcitability caused by genetic defects affecting ion channels or repeat expansions. This course reviews these disorders, including myotonic dystrophies, nondystrophic myotonias, and periodic paralysis syndromes, and their distinct clinical presentations, diagnostic considerations, and management approaches. Participants will gain an understanding of the differentiation of major myotonic syndromes, characteristic clinical features, appropriate diagnostic strategies including electromyography and genetic testing, and evidence-based approaches for symptom management, trigger avoidance, and supportive care. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying myotonic disorders, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to reduce complications and improve outcomes.
