Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are benign, inflammatory outgrowths of the sinonasal mucosa that can lead to chronic nasal obstruction, congestion, and diminished quality of life. These lesions are commonly associated with chronic rhinosinusitis but may also occur in the context of systemic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease. The condition is multifactorial, involving persistent mucosal inflammation, immune dysregulation, and epithelial barrier dysfunction. Risk factors include asthma, allergic rhinitis, and certain genetic conditions. Clinically, patients who present with nasal polyps often report nasal blockage, hyposmia or anosmia, postnasal drip, and facial pressure. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, supported by nasal endoscopy and imaging, typically computed tomography of the sinuses, to assess the extent of the disease and rule out alternative diagnoses. Meticulous history taking and physical examination are crucial in establishing a comprehensive differential diagnosis, particularly in distinguishing nasal polyps from other nasal masses. Management strategies range from medical therapies, such as intranasal corticosteroids, saline irrigation, and biologics, to surgical intervention in refractory cases. Endoscopic sinus surgery may be necessary for symptom relief and restoration of nasal airflow. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to sharpen learners’ skills in evaluating and managing nasal polyps. Participants will deepen their understanding of the condition’s etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation. Current diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations will also be discussed. Enhanced proficiency will equip clinicians to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for affected individuals.
