Nasogastric Tube Insertion

A nasogastric (NG) tube is a flexible catheter inserted through the nasal passage into the stomach for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. It is commonly used for gastric decompression in bowel obstruction or ileus, enteral nutrition delivery in patients unable to maintain adequate oral intake, medication administration, and gastric lavage in selected toxicologic emergencies. Proper placement technique, confirmation of intragastric location (preferably via radiographic verification), and vigilant monitoring are essential to minimize complications such as airway misplacement, aspiration, sinusitis, epistaxis, esophageal injury, and, rarely, intracranial placement in patients with basilar skull fractures. Appropriate indication selection and adherence to evidence-based insertion and maintenance protocols are critical to patient safety. Clinicians participating in this course enhance their competence in appropriate patient selection, safe insertion techniques, and reliable confirmation of NG tube placement. The activity strengthens understanding of indications and contraindications, and reinforces evidence-based strategies for enteral feeding initiation and gastric decompression. Participants also refine interdisciplinary communication and documentation practices to ensure safe transitions of care and improved patient outcomes in both acute and critical care settings.
