Navigating the Expanding NET Treatment Arsenal: Key Advances in Targeted Therapy & Nuclear Medicine

The therapeutic landscape for NETs that have progressed after the use of somatostatin analogues is expanding after years of stagnation. Accompanying the emergence of peptide receptor radionuclide medicines and targeted therapy are a number of knowledge and competence gaps tied to their properties and positioning in evolving treatment algorithms. Additionally, while awareness of NETs is rising among oncology healthcare providers, clinically consequential misdiagnoses and diagnostic delays remain common to the detriment of those living with these malignancies. Through a mixture of small group and case-based education, oncologists, gastroenterologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and other ancillary clinicians working in community settings can increase their index of suspicion for NETs, better navigate the associated diagnostic workup, and gain familiarity with biomarkers that can inform treatment. Educational initiatives can additionally augment learners ability to integrate newer medicines into real-world, community practice settings and work collaboratively as members of multidisciplinary teams to determine the most appropriate sequence of medicines for patients with NETs. By having a better appreciation of the perspectives of professional colleagues and patients, oncology healthcare providers can ensure that those in their care achieve the best possible outcome.
