Neuroendocrine Tumors: Accelerating Diagnosis and Optimizing Multidisciplinary Care in a Rapidly Evolving Treatment Era

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are relatively rare neoplasms that can develop in many organ systems but predominantly affect the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lung. However, incidence has increased more than sixfold in the United States over the last 4 decades. The combination of diverse clinical presentations of NETs in various body locations, nonspecific symptomatology, and relative rarity makes timely diagnosis and management challenging. Optimal diagnosis of NETs requires a well-coordinated multidisciplinary team to form a comprehensive diagnostic picture. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) such as 177Lu-DOTATATE has been established as a standard of care treatment modality for some patients with NETs. In the context of targeted therapies, cabozantinib, an oral small-molecule inhibitor of multiple tyrosine kinases, recently received FDA approval for use after PRRT or everolimus. Join Dr. Jonathan Strosberg as he discusses the latest evidence and expert insights regarding the diagnosis and treatment of NETs and gastroenteropancreatic NETs.
