Neoplastic Lumbosacral Plexopathy

Neoplastic lumbosacral plexopathy involves injury to one or more lumbosacral plexus nerves due to malignant tumors. The condition is often a complication of advanced-stage cancer, presenting with pain, motor weakness, and sensory disturbances. Neoplastic lumbosacral plexopathy can result from various cancers, with abdominal and primary pelvic malignancies being the most frequently encountered in clinical practice. Neoplastic lumbosacral plexopathy is diagnosed using imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, with findings indicating tumor infiltration or mass effect on the plexus. Management typically involves addressing the underlying malignancy, often with a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to reduce tumor burden. Pain management and physical therapy may also be implemented to improve function and quality of life. This article for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing neoplastic LSP. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the condition’s etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation, and recommended diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Greater proficiency equips healthcare practitioners to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for individuals with neoplastic LSP.
