Noninfectious Complications of Blood Transfusion

Noninfectious transfusion complications encompass a range of reactions that can vary from mild to life-threatening, requiring timely recognition and intervention. Common acute reactions, such as febrile nonhemolytic reactions, urticaria, and pruritus, are often self-limiting and resolve without serious consequences. However, severe complications like transfusion-related acute lung injury, acute hemolytic reactions, and transfusion-associated circulatory overload can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. These reactions may present with symptoms such as respiratory distress, hypotension, hemoglobinuria, jaundice, or abnormal bleeding. Due to the often nonspecific initial presentation of these complications, rapid assessment, laboratory investigation, and adherence to transfusion safety protocols are essential for ensuring prompt diagnosis and intervention, ultimately improving patient outcomes. This activity provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively assess, differentiate, and manage noninfectious transfusion complications. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology underlying various transfusion reactions, enabling accurate identification and timely intervention. The course emphasizes early symptom recognition, appropriate diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management strategies to minimize risks and enhance patient safety. By collaborating with an interprofessional team, clinicians improve communication, streamline decision-making, and ensure adherence to transfusion safety protocols. This team-based approach enhances the ability to recognize and manage complications swiftly, leading to better patient outcomes and overall transfusion safety.
