Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Infection

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), also known as atypical mycobacteria, comprise more than 150 environmental species capable of causing a broad spectrum of infections, including pulmonary disease, lymphadenitis, skin and soft tissue infections, disseminated disease, and less common manifestations involving the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and central nervous systems. This course reviews the increasing global incidence of NTM infections, which has elevated them to a significant public health concern, particularly among immunocompromised individuals, patients with structural lung disease, and those with indwelling medical devices or recent procedural exposure. This activity outlines the diagnostic evaluation, which remains challenging due to the organisms diverse clinical presentations, slow-growing characteristics, environmental ubiquity, and complex microbiologic identification requirements, as well as management that frequently requires prolonged multidrug antimicrobial therapy, careful monitoring for adverse effects, and, in selected cases, surgical intervention. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in identifying NTM risk factors and clinical manifestations, applying current guideline-based diagnostic criteria, differentiating among major NTM species, initiating evidence-based treatment strategies, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach to managing this condition to improve patient outcomes.
