Novel Therapies for Perioperative Management of Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer

As the molecular events responsible for invasive bladder cancer have become better understood in recent years, novel immunotherapies have emerged as a new therapeutic option. In particular, the role of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has expanded in the perioperative management of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). These newer immunotherapies have been shown to improve outcomes, but they are associated with unique, sometimes life-threatening, adverse events (AEs). This activity reviews the expanding use of ADCs and ICIs in MIBC (including the mechanisms underlying their effectiveness), provides updates on evolving treatment guidelines and management strategies for common treatment-related AEs, and looks at new and emerging clinical trial data.
