Ocular Neuropathic Pain

Ocular neuropathic pain is a complex ocular condition characterized by altered pain processing and heightened sensitivity to normally nonpainful stimuli, often occurring without visible abnormalities on clinical examination. This diagnosis of exclusion is often difficult to recognize and may be mistaken for dry eye disease, leading to delayed diagnosis and management. This activity reviews the etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, treatment options, and ongoing management strategies for ocular neuropathic pain. Participants learn to identify clinical features, differentiate ocular neuropathic pain from other ocular surface disorders, apply appropriate diagnostic approaches, and implement evidence-based treatment strategies to improve patient care. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the condition s multifactorial nature and addressing patient-specific needs. Collaboration among clinicians, ophthalmologists, optometrists, pain specialists, pharmacists, nurses, and other interprofessional healthcare professionals enhances diagnostic accuracy, facilitates coordinated management, improves patient education, and optimizes clinical outcomes.
