Osteoporosis in Females

Osteoporosis is a silent, progressive disease that disproportionately affects postmenopausal women and predisposes them to fracture. This chronic metabolic bone disorder is characterized by decreased bone mass and deteriorated bone microarchitecture. Risk factors include declining estrogen levels, aging, family history, low body weight, and insufficient calcium or vitamin D intake. Osteoporotic fractures, especially of the hip, spine, and wrist, significantly impact morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Early diagnosis through bone mineral density (BMD) testing and appropriate management strategies are essential for preventing fractures and preserving bone health in women. Despite the heightened global prevalence, the condition is often underdiagnosed, and in multiple instances, there are missed opportunities to initiate screening or treatment. There is poor awareness amongst both healthcare professionals and at-risk individuals. This educational activity reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management of osteoporosis in females, equipping healthcare professionals with the latest clinical strategies for identifying and managing osteoporosis. Learners explore the latest guidelines, become familiar with differing techniques for assessing BMD, and compare various management options, including both pharmacological and nonpharmacological, to prevent and treat fractures. This activity also highlights the role of an interprofessional healthcare team in detecting osteoporosis and individualizing treatment plans, improving outcomes with the overall goal of reducing the burden of osteoporotic fractures and complications.
