Papillomas: A Multisystem Overview of HPV-Associated and HPV-Independent Lesions

Papillomas are generally benign, noncancerous proliferations of epithelial cells, most commonly caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They are characterized by the growth of epithelial cells that typically form outward-projecting, finger-like or frond-like structures. This exophytic growth pattern gives rise to their distinctive papillary appearance. However, certain types notably inverted papillomas of the sinonasal tract and urinary bladder display an endophytic growth pattern, where the proliferating epithelium extends downward into the underlying stromal tissue. Although the term “papilloma” is often used clinically to refer specifically to squamous cell papillomas, it encompasses a broader range of lesions originating from various epithelial types, including squamous, transitional (urothelial), glandular (ductal), and columnar epithelium. Defining the term precisely is crucial, as its use spans multiple medical specialties and anatomical sites, where it may imply different growth patterns and clinical behaviors. This activity provides healthcare professionals with the skills to identify various papilloma subtypes, assess their associated risks, and determine when further evaluation or referral is necessary. This activity also emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare providers to ensure coordinated diagnosis, management, prevention, and patient education.
