Patella Fractures

Patellar fractures are clinically significant injuries that may compromise the extensor mechanism, disrupt articular congruity, and impair long-term knee function. Management requires accurate diagnosis, appropriate fracture classification, and careful assessment of extensor mechanism integrity, fracture displacement, articular step-off, comminution, patellar component stability in periprosthetic fractures, and residual bone stock. Treatment ranges from nonoperative management to operative fixation with tension-band constructs, cannulated screws, suture-based techniques, plating systems, partial patellectomy, or other approaches tailored to fracture characteristics. Participation in this course enhances knowledge of contemporary diagnostic strategies, fracture classification, evidence-based treatment selection, fixation techniques, and rehabilitation principles for traumatic and periprosthetic patellar fractures. Collaboration with an interprofessional team improves treatment planning, coordinates perioperative and rehabilitative care, reduces complications, and enhances functional recovery and patient outcomes.
