Patient Restraint and Seclusion

Restraints and seclusion are used as interventions of last resort in the inpatient psychiatric treatment of severely agitated patients to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Restraints and seclusion are controversial in inpatient mental health care and can be inconsistent with the principles of patient-centered care. Risks to patients and staff must be considered when deciding whether to use seclusion or restraints, given the requirement for least restrictive measures. This activity discusses the prevention of restraints and seclusion, types of restraints, indications for their use, risk factors, and the adverse effects of restraints and seclusion on both patients and staff. This activity reviews current practice recommendations, discusses ways to reduce the use of restraints and seclusion in clinical settings, and provides guidelines on the safe use of restraints and seclusion when necessary, empowering healthcare professionals and the interdisciplinary inpatient psychiatric team with the necessary knowledge and tools to provide optimal patient and staff safety during emergency situations.
