Pediatric Feeding Disorders: Recognition, Diagnosis, and Management

Pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs) are complex, multifactorial conditions that interfere with a child s ability to eat or drink safely and effectively, potentially compromising growth, development, and psychosocial functioning. Defined by a 2019 consensus statement, PFDs are characterized by impairments across 4 key domains medical, nutritional, feeding skills, and psychosocial and are distinct from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. These disorders can affect infants, toddlers, and older children with varying degrees of severity. Without timely recognition and comprehensive intervention, PFDs may result in serious short- and long-term consequences, including malnutrition, developmental delays, feeding tube dependence, and significant family stress. This activity provides healthcare professionals with a detailed overview of PFDs, enabling them to recognize, diagnose, and effectively manage these complex, multifactorial conditions. This activity emphasizes the importance of early recognition, structured evaluation, evidence-based management strategies, and individualized, interdisciplinary care. This activity also reviews diagnostic criteria, risk factors, and common clinical presentations, along with diagnostic tools such as swallow studies, allergy testing, and nutritional assessments. The activity explores targeted interventions, including medical and surgical treatments, dietary planning, feeding skill therapy, and behavioral support. In addition, this activity also highlights the importance of family involvement, effective communication, and collaboration among interprofessional healthcare providers in improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for children affected by PFDs.
