Percutaneously Inserted Ventricular Assist Device

Percutaneously inserted ventricular assist devices (pVADs) are increasingly used in the management of acute and chronic heart failure, particularly in cardiogenic shock and high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention. These nonpulsatile axial flow pumps support circulation by unloading the ventricles and improving cardiac output. Advances in device technology have expanded available options, allowing tailored levels of support based on clinical need. This activity reviews left- and right-sided pVADs, including design, mechanisms, indications, contraindications, insertion techniques, and complications. It also highlights key clinical data and comparisons with other mechanical circulatory support strategies, with emphasis on patient selection and device choice. Participants will strengthen their ability to apply pVAD therapy effectively while reinforcing interprofessional collaboration to optimize patient outcomes and safety.
