Peripheral Nerve Blocks

Advances in surgical techniques and the increasing use of minimally invasive procedures have heightened the demand for effective outpatient analgesia. Peripheral nerve blocks have emerged as a superior option for regional anesthesia, often outperforming oral medications and general anesthesia in terms of tolerance and efficacy. While no strict guidelines dictate their use, peripheral nerve blocks are generally employed when conservative measures fail or to avoid the adverse effects associated with systemic medications and general anesthesia. They are particularly beneficial for patients at risk of respiratory depression, those intolerant to oral medications, or individuals aiming to reduce opioid consumption. Though generally safe, potential complications of peripheral nerve blocks include nerve injury, hematoma, local anesthetic systemic toxicity, allergic reactions, infections, and post-block neurological dysfunction. This course explores peripheral nerve blocks, including contraindications, indications, and potential complications. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in recognizing appropriate cases for peripheral nerve blocks, understanding common block types and the recommended technique for each, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when performing this procedure.
