Placental Abruption

Placental abruption, the premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall before completion of the second stage of labor, is a rare but serious complication of pregnancy. Occurring in approximately 0.4% to 1.0% of pregnancies, it is a leading cause of bleeding in the second half of gestation and poses significant risks, including maternal hemorrhage, morbidity, mortality, and fetal compromise or death. The sudden and unpredictable onset of placental abruption necessitates rapid recognition and intervention to preserve both maternal and fetal health. This activity equips clinicians with the knowledge and tools needed to address the challenges of placental abruption. Participants review the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnostic complexities, and evidence-based treatment strategies associated with this condition. The activity also emphasizes the importance of efficient evaluation, prompt stabilization, and effective interprofessional collaboration. By engaging in this activity, clinicians can expect to enhance their ability to identify, manage, and coordinate care for patients experiencing placental abruption, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.
